1. Prepare your Garden
The very first thing you have to do is make sure the garden itself is looking its best. With festive decorations, you’ll be drawing attention to it. It’s always great to ensure your garden looks its best before putting out the decorations.
Greenery
Prune trees and bushes to ensure they look under control. Sometimes, this is best done at the end of summer, but it depends on the plant. It’s certainly not too late to do a bit of pruning to ensure everything’s tidy.
Having evergreen trees in your garden helps to ensure it still looks green and colourful even in the winter. Holly bushes are not only associated with Christmas, but they produce bright red berries that add a splash of colour in the grey December weather. They’re a great choice!
Colourful Flowers
Just because it’s winter, doesn’t mean you can’t have some flowers in your garden. Getting some natural colour into your garden really helps to compliment your Christmas decorations.
You can plant heather, winter sun mahonias, poinsettia, Christmas cactus and jasminum nudiflorum to get some flowers in your garden even in the winter months.
Lawn
Make sure your lawn looks great this festive season before you get the decorations out. Aeration can help to prevent it becoming overly muddy in the wet conditions, as well as reducing the possibility of your grass developing fusarium patch (or snow mould).

2. Get Creative!
Once your garden is looking great, it’s time to get creative and put out the festive decorations. There are so many ideas you could try and we’ve pulled a few together to inspire you.
Christmas Trees
Christmas trees are usually associated with indoors, but there’s no reason you can’t decorate a tree in your garden. It’s particularly effective with evergreen trees, particularly spruce, pine or fir trees.
Invest in some colourful lights (be sure to that they can be used outdoors!) and wrap them around one of your trees. It’s a easy and effective way to decorate your garden for Christmas.
If you wanted to take it a step further, you could get some outdoor baubles and hang them from the branches. It’s best to avoid glass ones as they could easily blow off in the wind and break!
Lights
Lights are a key element to any Christmas decorations. It depends on your taste as to what kind of lights you want. Some gardens have just white lights to create a wintery theme. These could include lights arranged to mimic icicles hung from your roof or windows, or simple twinkling white lights in topiary. If you love the bright colours of Christmas, however, then go for the more colourful varieties!
Christmas Windows
You could style your garden to bring attention to your Christmas window display. Trim trees and bushes to make your window more visible. You can make the most of the dark evenings outside by creating silhouette displays that can be enjoyed from the garden and outside.
Projections
Instead of lights, you can opt for a projection! You can choose a simple design that mimics lights (without the hard work of putting the lights up!) or even a full on show. This can be set up against a wall of your house, on your garden shed, or against a garden wall to create a mesmerising display!
