Is your lawn looking tired, patchy, or struggling to grow as lush and green as you’d like? If so, a scarify may be just what your lawn needs.
Scarifying removes layers of thatch and moss buildup that prevent water, air, and nutrients from reaching grass roots, allowing for stronger growth and a healthier lawn.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the scarification process step-by-step to ensure your lawn bounces back greener, healthier, and more resilient.
1. Prepare your lawn
To start, begin by cutting the grass to about 1-2 cm in height. By trimming the grass short, you allow the scarifier to reach the thatch layer more effectively.
Next, if the soil seems too dry, lightly water it a day or two before scarifying. This will help soften the soil, making it easier for the scarifier to pull up thatch and moss.
2. Start scarification
Set your scarifier to a shallow setting for a light dethatching or a deeper setting if there’s significant thatch buildup. Run the scarifier over the lawn in straight, even rows, overlapping slightly as you go.
For best results, scarify the lawn again at a 90-degree angle to your first pass. This cross-pattern ensures you remove as much thatch and moss as possible.
3. Remove debris
After scarifying, you’ll find pulled-up thatch, moss, and soil clumps scattered across the lawn surface. At this stage, use a rake or leaf blower to clear away the debris. By removing the debris immediately, you prevent it from matting down and blocking light from reaching the grass.
4. Aerate (optional)
If the soil is heavily compacted, it’s a good idea to aerate after scarifying. Using a lawn aerator (either manual or mechanical) will help to loosen the soil, improve drainage, and allow air to reach the grass roots.
5. Reseed rare patches
Scarifying may leave bare patches where thatch or moss was thickest, it’s helpful to lightly sprinkle grass seed over these areas. Afterwards, gently rake the seeds into the soil for best results.
6. Water
Finally, lightly water the lawn daily for a few weeks, keeping the soil consistently moist until new grass begins to grow.
By following these steps, scarifying can transform your lawn, making it thicker, greener, and more resilient. With a little patience and regular care, your lawn will recover from scarifying quickly, producing a lush, green lawn that’s the envy of the neighbourhood.
