What is thatch?
Thatch is a layer of organic debris that builds up between the grass and the soil. Thatch is not always seen as a problem for your lawn, and the right amount of thatch is actually seen as healthy for your lawn, aiding water absorption and protecting the grass blades from more extreme temperatures.
Excessive thatch on your lawn, however, is something you don’t want. It causes problems like:
- Blocking moisture and nutrients from getting to the grassroots
- Uneven surfaces, causing mowing problems
- Compacted soil, leading to stunted grass growth
How can I spot thatch?
There are some easy ways of noticing excessive thatch on your lawn.
- Look for dead patches on your lawn
- Check if your lawn is feeling ‘spongey’ under foot
- Water pools form after rainfall; this can indicate that the water is not draining effectively through the thatch
- The lawn has become uneven in certain areas
